Premarital Counseling is a way for engaged couples to learn more about themselves, their partners, and their relationship before they are married. It usually consists of about 5-8, 50 minute couples counseling sessions with a therapist. Many of these therapists uses personality or temperament tests to help educate couples on how their personality work both together in harmony and against each other in conflict.
I know, most couples that are starry-eyed and in love don’t have any desire to hear about each other’s (or their own) faults. And yes, Premarital counseling can (and should) create anxiety in both partners. After all you’re talking about spending the rest of your life with this person (and nobody is perfect).
But, the flip side to that is; through awareness of what you are both bringing into the marriage, you’ll be better equipped to deal with the hard times when they come. Because all marriages go through hard times. The premartial counseling process will allow you to gain insight about each of your expectations for the marriage, the issues that you have had since before you met each other, previously unknown concerns about your partner, and how all of these things interact/where you are likely to hit potholes together in the future. I can’t stress to you how beneficial it can be to have a jump start on your partnership in life and premarital counseling is a great way to do that!
